Chinese Taipei Poised to Shine in WBC Pool C Matchups

As the 2026 World Baseball Classic (WBC) approaches, Chinese Taipei is preparing for its highly anticipated matchups in Pool C. The tournament kicks off on March 5, 2026, with Chinese Taipei facing Samurai Japan the following day at the Tokyo Dome.

Team Overview: Chinese Taipei

This year’s roster features key players from the victorious 2024 Premier12 and those who participated in the 2023 WBC and the qualifying rounds held last February. Notably, Chinese Taipei has achieved a milestone by recruiting two Taiwanese American players for the first time.

However, the team faced a setback when infielder Jonathon Long, a highly regarded prospect from the Chicago Cubs’ Triple-A affiliate, withdrew due to an injury sustained in preseason games. Despite this, outfielder Stuart Fairchild, who has played 277 Major League games and hit 18 home runs, has joined the team.

Rostering Success

Chinese Taipei’s lineup boasts a strong mix of established CPBL talent, unsigned prospects from NPB and MLB, and the newly recruited Taiwanese Americans. The current roster comprises:

  • 16 pitchers
  • 3 catchers
  • 6 infielders
  • 5 outfielders

Among the pitchers, nine are active in Japan or the U.S., marking a record high participation of players from international leagues. This substantial boost in pitcher quality aims to address previous weaknesses that have led to match struggles in past WBC editions.

Pitching Team Highlights

The starting rotation is anchored by NPB’s Yoshinobu Kubo (Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters) and Hsu Li-Chin (Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks). Other key pitchers include:

  • Lin Yu-Chin (AAA, Arizona Diamondbacks) – known for a stellar performance against Samurai Japan in the Premier12 final.
  • Chen Po-Yu (AAA, Pittsburgh Pirates) – recognized for his exceptional movement on the ball.
  • Chuang Chen-Jung (AA, Oakland Athletics) – the team’s leader in innings pitched last season.
  • Lin Wei-En (AA, Oakland Athletics) – a promising left-handed pitcher who recently advanced from Single-A.

Closer Sun Yi-Lei (Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters), alongside other CPBL pitchers like Chen Guan-Yu and Chang Yi, rounds out the bullpen, providing depth and experience.

Offensive Lineup

The batting order features prominent players expected to make a significant impact:

  • Stuart Fairchild – Major League experience adds depth.
  • Chang Chieh-Hsiang – having hit a home run in the Premier12 final.
  • Lin An-Ke (Seibu Lions) – known for powerful swings.
  • Wu Nien-Ting – recognized as last season’s CPBL batting champion.
  • Li Hao-Yu – labeled as “the strongman” after an impressive season with the Detroit Tigers’ Triple-A team.

For pinch-hitting, Gi Liang-Kong, who had 24 home runs and 86 RBIs last season, is a player to watch.

Catchers Joining Forces

Lin Chia-Chung and Chiang Shiao-Hung, both skilled catchers and former classmates, are anticipated to strengthen the team dynamics while providing essential support to the pitching staff.

Pre-Tournament Record

In preparation, Chinese Taipei faced NPB teams, suffering defeats with scores of 0-4 to the SoftBank Hawks and 1-6 against the Nippon-Ham Fighters. Despite these results, the players displayed potential for improvement.

The confidence and teamwork cultivated during training, under the leadership of Captain Chen Chieh-Hsiang, promise to enhance their competitive edge for the inaugural match against Australia.

Looking Ahead

Chinese Taipei’s first WBC game is critical. A victory against Australia can set a positive tone, similar to their experience in the 2024 Premier12. Facing the formidable Samurai Japan in their second game, following the historical clashes since 2013, both teams will be eager for success in a high-stakes encounter.
