Trent McDuffie Trade: Rams Land All-Pro CB From Chiefs in Blockbuster NFL Deal
Trent McDuffie Trade

The NFL offseason just blew wide open. The Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to trade cornerback Trent McDuffie to the Los Angeles Rams in one of the biggest NFL trades of the 2026 offseason. Patrick Mahomes said it best with one word — "Damn." Puka Nacua said it with a sunglasses emoji. Here is everything you need to know.

Trent McDuffie Trade Details: Four Picks to Kansas City

The Chiefs have agreed to a blockbuster trade with the Rams to send All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie to Los Angeles for four draft picks, including the No. 29 pick in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft.

In exchange for McDuffie, the Chiefs will receive four draft picks: a 2026 first-round pick, a 2026 fifth-round pick, a 2026 sixth-round pick, and a 2027 third-round pick.

The full trade breakdown:

Chiefs Receive Rams Receive
2026 1st Round Pick (No. 29) Trent McDuffie
2026 5th Round Pick
2026 6th Round Pick
2027 3rd Round Pick

The trade cannot become official until the new league year starts at 4:00 p.m. ET on March 11.

Trent McDuffie Contract: Set to Become Highest-Paid CB in NFL

McDuffie is expected to receive a new contract upon completion of the trade with more than $30.1 million in new money, making him the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL.

McDuffie would have earned $13.6 million with the Chiefs in 2026. The Rams, who have more than $40 million in salary cap space, are well positioned to get the deal done immediately.

Why the LA Rams Made This Move

The Rams are maximizing their Super Bowl window with 38-year-old MVP quarterback Matthew Stafford, who won his first league MVP in 2025 and confirmed his return for 2026.

Los Angeles fell short of its Super Bowl aspirations largely because its secondary fell apart down the stretch. McDuffie immediately improves that unit, while the Rams offense figures to be just as explosive in 2026. Puka Nacua had an all-time season in 2025, leading the NFL with 129 catches, 1,715 receiving yards, and 10 touchdowns.

The Rams' trade for McDuffie vaulted them to the top of 2026 Super Bowl odds immediately after the deal was announced.

Puka Nacua Reaction: A College Reunion

Nacua celebrated the news by reposting an old message to his newest Rams colleague that read "22!!!!! I see you Trent" — captioned with a sunglasses emoji.

Nacua and McDuffie were teammates at Washington together as part of the school's 2019 recruiting class and spent two seasons together before Nacua transferred to BYU. Now both are Rams — and both are hungry for a Super Bowl ring.

Why the Kansas City Chiefs Dealt McDuffie

The Chiefs entered 2026 more than $57 million over the cap. This is the ninth time in the last ten years the Rams have traded their own first-round pick — and the Chiefs now hold picks No. 9 and No. 29 in the first round of April's draft.

The Chiefs have made similar moves before — sending Tyreek Hill to Miami for five picks four years ago and shipping L'Jarius Sneed out of town two years ago. General manager Brett Veach is rebuilding the roster through the draft rather than paying star players on expiring deals.

Patrick Mahomes is also dealing with a significant knee injury sustained in December, and Travis Kelce's future remains uncertain heading into an age-37 season — making this an official transition period for the Chiefs dynasty.

Trent McDuffie: Who the Rams Are Getting

McDuffie posted the second-best coverage grade among all cornerbacks since 2023 at 87.7, per Pro Football Focus. He earned first-team All-Pro in 2023 while playing mostly as a slot cornerback and second-team All-Pro in 2024 after moving outside following L'Jarius Sneed's departure.

McDuffie is a Los Angeles homecoming story — a Westminster native who played high school ball at St. John Bosco and now returns home to SoFi Stadium, where Super Bowl LXI will be played next year. For the Rams, this trade is not just a roster move. It is a championship statement.
