Apple Unveils M5 MacBook Air and Enhanced MacBook Pro

Apple has introduced an upgraded MacBook Air equipped with the new M5 chip. Alongside this, enhanced MacBook Pro models featuring the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips were also announced. This launch took place on a Tuesday, with preorders beginning on March 4th and in-store availability starting March 11th.

New Features of the M5 MacBook Air

The M5 MacBook Air offers significant improvements over its predecessor. The new model comes with:

  • 512GB Base Storage: This is double the storage capacity of the previous M4 MacBook Air.
  • Max Storage Capacity: It now supports up to 4TB, an increase from 2TB.
  • Faster SSD Performance: Apple claims a 2x faster read/write speed than the previous generation.
  • Connectivity: Support for Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 is included.

Pricing for the M5 MacBook Air starts at $1,099 for the 13-inch model and $1,299 for the 15-inch version, which reflects a $100 increase over the M4 MacBook Air.

Enhancements in the M5 MacBook Pro

The new MacBook Pro line features advanced chips, offering enhanced performance capabilities:

  • M5 Pro Chip: Includes an 18-core CPU with an option for a 20-core GPU.
  • M5 Max Chip: Comes with an 18-core CPU and boasts an impressive 40-core GPU.

The base storage for all M5 MacBook Pro models has also been upgraded. They now begin at:

  • 1TB Storage: An increase from the previous 512GB for all models.
  • New Pricing:
    • 14-inch M5 MacBook Pro: $1,699 (up from $1,599).
    • M5 Pro MacBook Pro: $2,199 (a $200 increase).
    • M5 Max MacBook Pro: $3,599 (up $400 from its predecessor).
