Forbidden Worlds Film Festival Returns to Bristol Megascreen

Forbidden Worlds Film Festival Returns to Bristol Megascreen

Launched in 2022, the Forbidden Worlds Film Festival has quickly become Bristol’s leading genre event. It screens repertory fantasy, action, science fiction and horror from around the world.

This year’s theme explores myths and legends. The programme spans four days of heroic warriors, fantastical realms and ferocious beasts.

Programme highlights

  • A 45th anniversary screening of Clash of the Titans.
  • The samurai adventure The Legend of the 8 Samurai.
  • A new 4K restoration of the Arthurian classic Excalibur.

Curators and direction

Timon Singh co-directs the festival and helps shape the programme. He notes that fantasy often lacks representation at film festivals.

Co-director Dave Taylor owns 20th Century Flicks, Bristol’s long-running DVD rental store. Many selections are drawn from that store’s archives.

Special guest

Renowned armourer Terry English is the festival’s special guest. He crafted costumes and swords for films such as Gladiator, Excalibur and Aliens.

Attendees can view hand-made armour and props from some of his productions. The displays offer insight into filmcraft and prop-making.

Venue and revival

The event takes place bi-annually at the Bristol Aquarium site. The venue houses the second largest screen in the South West.

The large curved wing contains an IMAX-style auditorium that sat unused for a decade. Local cinephiles revived it and renamed it Bristol Megascreen.

The 300-seater now hosts a range of screenings throughout the year, including the Forbidden Worlds Film Festival.

Programming ethos

The festival celebrates both films and the people who made them. It focuses on repertory and cult gems alongside restored classics.
