Glass Shards Sideline Wout van Aert from Ename Samyn Classic Victory Challenge
Wout van Aert faced a challenging return to competitive cycling at the Ename Samyn Classic. After a series of setbacks, including an ankle fracture and a stomach virus, he aimed for a strong performance but encountered misfortune instead.
Setbacks Leading to Ename Samyn Classic
- Van Aert fractured his ankle during a cyclo-cross race in January.
- A stomach bug delayed his racing debut to Le Samyn the following week.
Race Overview
On March 7, 2023, Van Aert started the Ename Samyn Classic but could not seize victory due to unfortunate circumstances. Despite appearing strong early in the race and assisting teammate Per Strand Hagenes during a late attack, fate took a turn when he suffered a rear wheel puncture.
Puncture and Its Consequences
With only 10 kilometers remaining, Van Aert pulled over to switch bikes with teammate Pietro Matteo. Soon after, he attempted to return to his spare bicycle, but he fell behind the peloton, finishing the race alone, minutes after the main group.
Glass Shards on the Course
Van Aert expressed concern about shards of glass he encountered on the route, suggesting they were unusually present. In a post-race interview, he reflected, “That smells like sabotage… It’s unusual for such debris to appear on a road we’ve ridden multiple times.”
Immediate Impact on Team Dynamics
Van Aert’s difficulties were compounded by the fact that Hagenes was caught late in his sprint, and the team did not place any riders in the top 10. The victory went to Jordi Meeus from Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe.
Grischa Niermann, Visma’s head of racing, noted Van Aert’s unfortunate timing, stating, “When Wout punctured, we were a minute and a half behind. By then, it was too late to catch up.” Despite the setback, he remained hopeful about future races.
Looking Forward
Van Aert will compete next in Strade Bianche, marking his return as a former champion since his last participation in 2021. Following this race, he plans to head to Tirreno-Adriatico and participate in the early Monuments of the season, including Milan-San Remo, the Tour of Flanders, and Paris-Roubaix.
Despite the disappointing outcome in Ename, Van Aert feels positive about his performance. “I felt good, but I couldn’t give myself real answers,” he concluded. “It was the right choice to race here, and I’m looking to build on this experience.”
