Québécoise in Dubai Shares Life under Threat of Iranian Missiles
Jade Lavoie, a Québécoise currently residing in Dubai with her partner, Simon Marcotte, has shared their harrowing experiences as Iranian missile attacks threaten the region. The couple spends significant time in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), where they have faced alarming situations due to recent geopolitical tensions.
Recent Missile Attacks in Dubai
Following a historic strike on Iran by Israeli and U.S. forces, Iranian missiles were launched in retaliation against Gulf countries, including the UAE. These attacks resulted in over 100 injuries and at least four fatalities across various cities, including Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Doha.
Destructive Impact on Dubai
- Explosions were reported at Dubai International Airport, the busiest airport in the world.
- Luxury hotels, such as the Burj Al Arab, were also targeted, leading to panic among residents.
On their first day in this chaotic environment, Simon described the experience as extremely stressful. “There were sounds of explosions everywhere,” he remarked, recalling looking up at the sky in fear. The couple experienced several air raid alerts, forcing them and other residents to seek shelter in their building’s basement for safety.
Fear and Uncertainty
As Jade explained, “We had four consecutive alerts, and we were scared.” Many families sought refuge together in the parking area, using pillows to attempt to sleep amid the anxiety. The couple spent over two hours in the basement, indicating the gravity of the situation.
A Temporary Halt in Air Travel
Dubai’s airspace was shut down for two days, causing significant travel disruptions. Although flights began resuming gradually on the evening of that Sunday, leaving the UAE remains complicated. Around 90% of the country’s population comprises expatriates.
Future Concerns and Plans
Both Jade and Simon expressed deep fears about flying during this tumultuous period but showed a desire to leave once circumstances allow. Jade stated, “It’s frightening to be in the air right now, but I want to leave as soon as it’s safe.”
Living Under Threat
Since the onset of these missile attacks, the couple has frequently heard explosions, mainly due to air defense systems intercepting missiles. Simon noted these interceptions create visual spectacles similar to fireworks, although debris falling from the sky poses a real danger.
Despite the luxurious lifestyle Dubai offers, including tax benefits for influencers, the recent violence has cast a shadow over their previously idyllic surroundings. Many influencers are documenting their experiences under threat, often inviting criticism for their responses to these tumultuous events.
The situation in Dubai serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of safety in regions affected by geopolitical conflicts. As Jade and Simon navigate their way through these challenges, their story resonates with many living in uncertainty as tensions escalate.
