Christopher Sánchez Shines with Impressive Changeup in Spring Training Debut
In a captivating display during his Grapefruit League debut, Cristopher Sánchez showcased an impressive changeup against the Toronto Blue Jays. The game, held at TD Ballpark in Dunedin, Florida, ended in a 7-5 loss for the Philadelphia Phillies, but Sánchez’s performance stood out as a highlight. He threw 32 pitches, with his changeup proving particularly effective; Blue Jays hitters missed on all seven of them, including notable swings from star player Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
Cristopher Sánchez’s Performance
Sánchez expressed confidence in his changeup, stating, “It’s been looking great since I reported to camp.” He acknowledged the importance of maintaining such form early in spring training. Despite allowing only two hits during his outing, Sánchez did face a challenge when he committed an error by dropping a ball while attempting to field it with his glove. Nevertheless, he quickly regained focus, striking out the subsequent batter with his changeup.
Upcoming World Baseball Classic
Looking ahead, Sánchez is set to fulfill a childhood dream by starting for the Dominican Republic in their first World Baseball Classic (WBC) game on March 6 against Nicaragua in Miami. He shared that Albert Pujols, the manager of the Dominican team, personally called him to confirm his starting role. “Never in my life would I have ever dreamed that something like this would happen,” Sánchez reflected on the opportunity.
Highlights from the Game
In addition to Sánchez’s standout performance, several other players made their mark. Justin Crawford went 2-for-3, hitting a double and using his speed for an infield single. Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper both played their final game before heading to Team USA camp, with Schwarber securing a single and Harper hitting a homer down the right field line. Bryan De La Cruz also contributed with a home run, while Garrett Stubbs managed a triple.
Pitching and Defensive Plays
On the mound, Brad Keller, who also left the game to join Team USA, gave up two earned runs from four hits. These included singles from Springer, Alejandro Kirk, and Ernie Clement, and a double from Andrés Giménez. Manager Rob Thomson commented on Keller’s slider performance, noting that while the fastball velocity was promising, it lacked the desired effectiveness.
In a further breakdown of the pitching performance, Zach McCambley, Génesis Cabrera, and Alex McFarlane each delivered a scoreless inning. However, in the sixth inning, Tim Mayza, who allowed four runs, faced difficulties after a throwing error by first baseman Keaton Anthony.
Looking Forward
- Next up, Andrew Painter is scheduled to make his first spring start against the New York Yankees on Sunday at 1:05 p.m.
As the Phillies players prepare for the WBC, manager Thomson emphasized their hard work, stating, “They put a lot of work in, not only in the offseason, but some extra work here in spring training.” With performances like Sánchez’s, the team looks poised for an exciting season ahead.
