New Australian Suburb Plans Unveiled with Bold Vision
Plans for a new suburb in Sydney have been unveiled, aiming to transform previously under-utilised port land into a vibrant community. The New South Wales (NSW) government announced its vision to create Bays West atop the Glebe Island industrial site, marking significant urban development for the area.
Details of the Bays West Development
The Bays West project will feature around 8,500 new homes, with a commitment to include at least 10% as affordable housing for essential workers. This includes housing for nurses, teachers, paramedics, and police officers, allowing them to live closer to their workplaces.
Key Features of the New Suburb
- Placement of homes above a new metro station, enhancing public transport access.
- Connection to the Central Business District (CBD) through ferries and bike paths.
- Development of public open spaces and waterfront access.
Premier Chris Minns emphasized the importance of this development in addressing the housing crisis in NSW. He stated, “We have to use well-located land better and plan for the future.” This change invites the opportunity for many to live and work in proximity, thereby fostering community growth.
Infrastructure Investments
To support this urban transformation, the NSW government will invest $270 million in transport infrastructure. This investment aims to accommodate increased activity and create more job opportunities at the nearby Port Kembla.
Preservation and Revitalisation Efforts
The project will retain existing facilities that support the working harbour, including a cruise terminal. In addition, the White Bay power station will undergo revitalisation, transforming it into a lively destination for nightlife and creative industries, as well as a new spot for major events like New Year’s fireworks.
NSW Minister for Planning Paul Scully assured the community that the changes would be smooth for both industries and future residents. Through careful master planning, the aim is to strike a balance between housing and job creation while maintaining the area’s working identity.
The Bays West project embodies a bold vision for Sydney’s future, reflecting a commitment to affordable living and sustainable urban growth.
