Sydney Unveils New Suburb Opposite Bustling Cruise Terminal

Sydney is set to welcome a new suburb, Bays West, which will be developed on Glebe Island. This area, currently an industrial port, will introduce up to 8,500 residences. The announcement was made by the state government on Tuesday.

New Housing Precinct Details

The Bays West suburb will be the first addition to inner Sydney’s housing landscape in decades. It will feature a minimum of 10% of homes designated as affordable and essential worker housing. These residences will be situated above the new Bays West Metro Station, which is currently under construction.

Location and Accessibility

Bays West is located approximately 4 kilometers west of Sydney’s central business district (CBD). The area will benefit from the installation of shore-power facilities to mitigate noise and emissions from the nearby White Bay Cruise Terminal.

Cruise Terminal and Operations

  • The White Bay Cruise Terminal is located around 2 kilometers from the new housing development.
  • It accommodates over 100 cruise ships annually, including mid-sized and luxury liners.
  • Mid-sized cruise ships typically carry between 1,000 and 2,500 passengers.

Planning Minister Paul Scully confirmed that the terminal will remain unchanged amidst the new development.

Transition from Port Operations

As part of the development plan, bulk port operations at Glebe Island will cease by 2030. This includes the handling of cement, gypsum, and sugar. The iconic silos spanning the Anzac Bridge will also be removed, as they are not listed on the state register and are not considered viable for adaptive reuse.

Future Planning and Support

Premier Chris Minns emphasized the importance of using well-located land effectively to ensure affordable living for future generations. The state government is taking measures to minimize the impact of these changes on the local community.

Investment in Infrastructure

To support the transition, the government is investing $270 million in infrastructure upgrades at Port Kembla in Wollongong, where many port operations will relocate. Some deepwater berths will remain operational, consolidating remaining activities within White Bay.

The planning includes provisions for community events, such as fireworks displays for New Year’s Eve and Vivid Sydney, which will still be organized in the area.

Overall, Bays West aims to balance urban development with the continuation of essential port operations, shaping the future of inner Sydney.
