Two in hospital after knifeman incident in Edinburgh

A man was arrested after a knife incident in edinburgh that left two people needing hospital treatment and prompted armed officers to lock down a tower block in the Calders area.

Police firearms officers were called to reports of a man with a bladed weapon in the Calders area of the city at 08: 25; some accounts used the name Calder for the neighbourhood. A stand-off followed after the suspect was believed to be holed up in a flat, and members of the public were seen shouting at him when he appeared at the window of an 11th-floor flat and looked down at the crowd for a number of hours.

The man was removed by police at around 16: 00 and arrested. He was quietly removed from the building a back door to avoid the crowd, Scotland reporter Jenness Mitchell said. Officers extended a cordon during the standoff to move onlookers further back and later removed the cordon after the crowd dispersed.

Two taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh

Two injured people were taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh with non-life-threatening injuries. Police confirmed a man was being treated for injuries described as consistent with being stabbed, while a woman was being treated for a cut to her head described as a laceration and not believed to be caused by a bladed weapon.

Armed response, vehicles and circulating footage

Pictures from the scene showed at least six police vehicles outside Cobbinshaw House, a tower block of flats, and armed officers on site. Several firearms officers were seen exiting the building during the response, though there was no sign of the suspect at certain points as the incident unfolded. Footage circulating on social media showed a man walking in the area holding two large knives and also showed a shop that had been damaged.

Local reaction and official reassurances

People from other flats in the block were seen looking out of their windows during the incident. One resident at the scene said, "I'm just trying to get in so I can feed my cat. " A small group of residents also expressed frustration at the media presence. Police have not released any details about the arrested man.

Ch Insp Scott Kennedy thanked the public for their assistance and patience while officers dealt with the incident, saying: "I understand what happened was alarming for the local community and I want to reassure the public there is no ongoing wider risk. " Police Scotland said the incident is not being treated as terror-related, enquiries are ongoing and officers will remain in the area.

Officers remained on scene after the arrest while enquiries continued; the cordon was later removed and the large crowd dispersed.
