Marshals Cast Revealed: Monica Dutton Dies of Cancer in Yellowstone Spinoff Premiere on CBS
The Marshals cast is now confirmed after the Yellowstone spinoff premiered on CBS Sunday night, March 1, 2026, with the episode delivering its most shocking development within minutes: Monica Dutton, played by Kelsey Asbille across all five seasons of Yellowstone, died of cancer in the year between the end of the flagship series and the start of Marshals. The character does not appear in the new show. "The best part of me died with you," Luke Grimes' Kayce tells Monica when he visits her grave at the end of the premiere's first hour.
The episode keeps mostly mum on the exact circumstances. Kayce and Tate are found still living at their small East Camp ranch in Montana. Showrunner Spencer Hudnut explains the decision directly: "Kayce's dealing with the grief and the loss. This is the person who really kept him anchored the entire run of Yellowstone. This is the love of his life. Her presence and her loss is definitely a big runner throughout the first season, and she'll be with him throughout the show."
Hudnut adds that Monica's death was intended to serve as more than a plot device: "To me, Monica is really guiding Kayce through this first episode, trying to help him find his new path. We really wanted to be respectful of the way that we said goodbye to her. I also didn't want to step on the ending of Yellowstone, because what they had was a beautiful ending. Unfortunately, real life intervened."

Without her, he has really had to step up."
Kayce is recruited into action by his old SEAL buddy Pete Calvin, played by Logan Marshall-Green. His new team includes Belle Skinner, played by Arielle Kebbel, and Andrea Cruz, played by Ash Santos. Gil Birmingham returns as Thomas Rainwater, who is injured when a bomb explodes during a protest at the Broken Rock Reservation in the premiere.
