Christine Fréchette Engages with Outaouais Community
Christine Fréchette is actively engaging with the Outaouais community as part of her campaign for leadership within the Quebec political landscape. Recently, significant developments have unfolded regarding public transport in Gatineau, a key focus for Fréchette.
Recent Changes to Gatineau’s Tramway Project
The Quebec government has withdrawn funding for the Gatineau tramway study. This decision has resulted in the dismantling of the project office established by the Société de transport de l’Outaouais (STO). Moving forward, Mobilité Infra Québec (MIQ) will oversee all matters related to the tramway.
Fréchette emphasizes the importance of MIQ’s expertise in managing this project. She expressed her intent to see the tramway initiative realized under their leadership. Addressing concerns about the relationship between Gatineau and Ottawa, she noted the necessity of maintaining strong transportation ties, given the project’s cross-border nature.
Highway Expansion Plans
Fréchette is also focused on advancing the expansion of Highway 50. This project is currently on hold due to budgetary constraints but remains a priority for her agenda.
Healthcare Initiatives in Outaouais
In discussing healthcare, Fréchette aims to enhance the region’s attractiveness through various initiatives. She highlighted the upcoming construction of a new hospital, anticipated to be completed by 2034, despite challenges such as the need to treat over 37,000 cubic meters of contaminated soil.
Fréchette acknowledges the unique healthcare dynamics in the Outaouais region, particularly due to its proximity to Ottawa and the allure of Ontario. Her remarks come in the wake of law changes that have caused dissatisfaction, resulting in 24 doctors leaving the area for better opportunities.
