Sydney Grandfather Murder: Lawyer Claims Client Not the Mastermind
A legal representative for one of the suspects in the murder case of Sydney grandfather Chris Baghsarian has stated that his client is “no mastermind” behind the crime. The 85-year-old was abducted from his residence in North Ryde on February 13, in what authorities believe may have been a case of mistaken identity.
Timeline of Events
On February 13, police were alerted to the kidnapping. Following thorough investigations, authorities executed search warrants in multiple locations, including:
- Kenthurst
- Castle Hill
- Lake Macquarie
At approximately 6:30 AM, strike force detectives, aided by the Raptor Squad, conducted these searches, leading to the seizure of vehicles, electronics, and clothing.
Arrests Made
Two men were arrested in connection with this case:
- Gerard Anthony Andrews, 29, arrested in Kenthurst
- Daniel Stevens, 24, arrested in Castle Hill
Both individuals were charged with murder and kidnapping with intent to ransom. They were taken to Riverstone Police Station for processing.
Court Appearances
Mr. Andrews appeared before Blacktown Local Court via video link on Thursday morning, where he did not apply for bail. He wore the same clothing as during his arrest and spoke briefly to confirm he could hear the magistrate. The hearing has been adjourned until April 17.
His lawyer, Paul McGirr, emphasized the sensitivity of the situation, stating, “My client was no mastermind.”
Mr. Stevens’ Court Hearing
Mr. Stevens also made a court appearance, which was likewise postponed to April 17. His lawyer, Javid Faiz, indicated that his client required medication for shingles but did not seek bail at this time.
“He takes the situation seriously,” Faiz remarked, acknowledging the community’s distress over the tragic incident.
Ongoing Investigations
Authorities are continuing their investigations into the kidnapping and murder. CCTV footage showed Mr. Baghsarian being forced into an SUV around 5 AM on the day of the incident. Police indicated that a ransom demand included a video of Mr. Baghsarian being assaulted, which led them to a property in Dural.
It is believed that the intended target of the kidnappers may have been a relative of Sydney businessman Dimitri Stepanyan, who has known criminal ties. The investigation led authorities to discover Mr. Baghsarian’s remains near a golf club in Pitt Town, following an extensive search.
Conclusion
The tragic murder of Chris Baghsarian has left a significant impact on the Sydney community. The investigation remains active as law enforcement searches for further evidence. Detectives have not yet disclosed the cause of death.
