Rowan Hosts Lt. Governor Caldwell as Rosa Parks Luncheon Keynote Speaker

On February 24, Rowan University’s Africana Studies program hosted its 21st annual Rosa Parks Luncheon. The event, which took place in the Eynon Ballroom, drew a large crowd of students, faculty, staff, and community members.

Celebrating Black History Month

The Rosa Parks Luncheon served as a key event in Rowan’s celebration of Black History Month. President Ali A. Houshmand opened the event, emphasizing the significance of recognizing those who have shaped history. He stated, “Today, we recognize that legacy as a call to action.”

Keynote Speaker: Lt. Governor Dr. Dale Caldwell

Rowan University welcomed New Jersey Lt. Governor Dr. Dale Caldwell as the keynote speaker. Dr. Caldwell, who is also New Jersey’s fourth Lieutenant Governor and its 35th Secretary of State, began with an engaging quiz. He encouraged attendees to reflect on notable figures in Black history, including the first Black president and governors.

  • Focus on small business support
  • Emphasis on workforce development
  • Discussion about home ownership for first-generation families
  • Highlighting tourism in New Jersey

During his address, Dr. Caldwell spoke passionately about New Jersey’s economy and the vital role small businesses play. He praised Rowan’s efforts in workforce development, asserting, “Even with all the challenges, I think it presents an opportunity to use the brilliance we have in this state.”

Honoring Legacy and Future Inspiration

Dr. Caldwell recognized the importance of remembering Black history, particularly in light of the 100th anniversary of Black History Month. He urged attendees to honor those who fought for their rights, stating, “We need to build on that and know that if we focus, if we’re willing to work hard, there is absolutely nothing we can’t accomplish.”

At the conclusion of the event, organizers honored Dr. Caldwell with the Rosa Parks Award and a gift basket. Additionally, Vice President for TD Bank and Rowan Alumnus Jennifer Carter-Lawyer offered affirmations, while Rev. Keith D. Dickens provided a benediction.

Supporting Education Through Scholarships

Proceeds from the Rosa Parks Luncheon are designed to support the Dr. Gary Hunter Scholarship. This scholarship was established to honor the legacy of the late historian, educator, and campus leader.

This year’s Rosa Parks Luncheon successfully combined reverence, education, and community engagement, underlining Rowan University’s commitment to honoring history while inspiring future leaders.
