Shapiro won’t commit to John Fetterman’s 2028 run, tells ICE ‘Don’t come’
Governor Josh Shapiro told News’ This Week on Sunday that he will wait to see what john fetterman decides before saying whether he would support a 2028 re-election bid, and again urged federal immigration agents not to carry out operations in Pennsylvania.
Shapiro warns ICE: “Don’t come”
On the program with Martha Raddatz, Shapiro reiterated a blunt message on potential ICE activity in the state: “Don’t come. We do not want it. ” He referenced earlier rumors of operations in Philadelphia, Lancaster and Pittsburgh and added, “We do not want that kind of chaos in our communities in Pennsylvania, so don’t come, but if you come, we are prepared to address it. ” The governor’s comment on Sunday echoed prior responses he has given about possible enforcement actions in those cities.
John Fetterman and a ‘constructive’ working relationship
Shapiro pushed back on a New York Times piece titled “Why Pennsylvania’s Two Most Powerful Democrats Don’t Speak, ” saying the portrayal was wrong and that he and John Fetterman have a constructive relationship aimed at serving the people of Pennsylvania. When asked directly whether he would support the senator if he sought re-election in 2028, Shapiro would not commit, saying he needs to wait and see what Fetterman decides to do.
Tariffs, courts and the State of the Union
The governor also sharply criticized President Trump’s use of global tariffs, saying they are driving up prices and hurting Pennsylvania farmers and small businesses. Shapiro noted a strained relationship with the president, pointing out that he has taken Trump to court 19 times during his time in office.
