Merrett Hints at Possible Re-signing Amidst Bombers Future Speculation

In a recent turn of events, Zach Merrett, the former captain of the Essendon Bombers, has expressed openness to the possibility of re-signing with the team. This comes after last year’s failed trade that saw him nearly join the Hawthorn Hawks. Merrett emphasized that discussions regarding a new deal are still in the very early stages.

Background of the Trade Bid

During the 2025 AFL Trade Period, Merrett became a focal point of trade speculation. The Bombers maintained a firm stance against trading him, even as teammates like Mason Redman and Nick Martin voiced their concerns about the situation. The proposed trade included Hawthorn offering Picks 10, 22, and their 2026 first-round pick, along with young midfielder Henry Hustwaite. The Bombers, however, were looking for the Hawks’ 2027 first-round pick and a 2026 second-round pick in return for Merrett.

The deal collapsed dramatically in the final moments, forcing Merrett to return to training with Essendon in November. Merrett stepped down as captain shortly after, but he now indicates that he might be willing to discuss a contract extension.

Current Status and Future Intentions

Only months after the trade drama, Merrett stated, “There’s some openness to listen” regarding his future at Essendon. He clarified that while nothing substantial has come from preliminary talks, his current contract still has two years remaining.

  • Merrett is contracted for two more years.
  • He hinted at a willingness to discuss a new deal.

Additionally, he mentioned improvements in the club’s fitness department, which aims to keep players healthy and enhance overall team performance.

Relationships with Teammates

Reflecting on the trade ordeal, Merrett felt comfortable returning to the team. He acknowledged a potential awkwardness but insisted that relationships were generally positive. Merrett emphasized that prior to the training, he and his teammates, Redman and Martin, had a dinner to ensure alignment and understanding of the situation.

AFL Origin Selection

Merrett has also earned a spot to represent Victoria in the upcoming AFL Origin game. Interestingly, he will play under assistant coach Sam Mitchell, the very person who attempted to recruit him to Hawthorn last season. Despite the past trade discussions, Merrett downplayed any tension and regards Mitchell merely as another coach.

As the season progresses, Merrett is focused on performing well for the Bombers and believes any discussions regarding contracts will unfold naturally in due time. “I need to get back and play with good footy,” he stated, emphasizing his commitment to the team.
