UCLA’s Sienna Betts Discusses Playing Basketball with Sister Lauren
Sisters Lauren and Sienna Betts play together for UCLA’s women’s basketball team. They head into the Final Four matchup with Texas on April 3.
Lauren is 22 and a projected top-five pick in the 2026 WNBA draft. Sienna is 19 and expected to take on a larger role next season.
Transfer and recruiting backstory
Lauren transferred to UCLA from Stanford in 2023. At that time, Sienna was a high school sophomore and had UCLA as her top choice.
Sienna initially resisted joining her sister on campus. She wanted to build her own college identity and weigh her options independently.
It took several months for Sienna to decide to commit to UCLA. Family influence became less central to her recruiting process.
Practice, boundaries and leadership
Early in the season, Sienna recalled a practice mistake that drew a sharp reaction from Lauren. Her first instinct was to tune out and listen to the coaches instead.
Lauren has emerged as a vocal leader for the Bruins. At Sienna’s request, Lauren deferred much of the mentoring to coaches and senior teammates.
Seniors Angela Dugalic and Charlisse Leger-Walker helped guide Sienna through her freshman year. That support created a clearer boundary between sister and coach roles.
History together and evolving relationship
The sisters previously played together in Aurora, Colorado. They shared time as a freshman and senior on the same high school team.
That period included forced proximity and more friction. Their dynamic at UCLA developed differently, with more space and mutual respect.
Mother Michelle Betts said Sienna values independence. She wanted opportunities to do things on her own in college.
Signs of growing closeness
The siblings showed signs of warming this season. They voluntarily chose to spend time together over the holidays, surprising their mother.
Lauren worked to introduce Sienna to teammates while giving her room to adjust. That approach helped their off-court relationship improve.
Looking ahead
Sienna averaged 14.7 minutes off the bench this season. Coaches and teammates expect her to play a larger role next year.
Lauren praised Sienna’s talent and projected impact for the program’s future. The family also looks forward to each sister forging separate paths again.
