‘The Simpsons’ Showrunner Vows No Series Finale
The Simpsons continues to maintain its place in popular culture, nearly 40 years after its inception. Showrunner Matt Selman has made it clear that there are no plans for a traditional series finale for the iconic family.
The Future of The Simpsons: No Series Finale
Selman recently discussed the show’s lasting appeal and his vision for its conclusion, or lack thereof. Although he acknowledged that the show will end one day, he emphasized that there won’t be a significant farewell event.
A Unique Take on Series Finales
In a recent interview, Selman mentioned a previous episode created about a year and a half ago. This particular episode served as a parody of typical series finales. Selman remarked, “We jammed every possible series finale concept into one show.” This creative approach is his way of signaling that the show will not follow a traditional finale format.
Groundhog Day-like Structure
- Characters reset each week.
- Avoidance of major character arcs that might lead to an emotional goodbye.
- Potential for Easter eggs in future episodes, but no poignant farewells.
The Show’s Legacy
Created by Matt Groening in 1987 as a series of animated shorts on The Tracey Ullman Show, The Simpsons gained its own animated series on Fox. It premiered on December 17, 1989, and is currently in its 37th season.
Milestone Episode and Future Projects
The milestone 800th episode, titled ‘Irrational Treasure,’ is set to air on Sunday at 8 PM ET/PT. In addition, The Simpsons will have its own dedicated channel on Disney+, and a new movie is scheduled for release in theaters on July 23, 2027.
As the show continues to evolve, Selman insists that it will remain true to its roots while entertaining audiences worldwide. The Simpsons remains a significant part of television history, entertaining viewers with its comedic take on the everyday lives of the beloved Simpson family.
