Logan Thompson’s journey from the University of Brock to the national stage is a remarkable testament to perseverance. Standing at 6 feet 4 inches and weighing around 200 pounds, Thompson, hailing from Calgary, faced significant setbacks early in his career. In the summer of 2018, he joined the Brock Badgers after being overlooked in the NHL draft.

After a successful junior career with the Brandon Wheat Kings, Thompson found himself without any offers from pro teams. Luc Lobsinger, the goalie coach at Brock University, recognized his potential and provided him with an opportunity. “We told him he’d play 90 to 95 percent of the games here,” Lobsinger recalled. This chance was crucial for Thompson’s career revival.
Thompson’s Development at Brock
During his time with the Brock Badgers, Thompson gained invaluable experience. He recorded an impressive 18 wins, six losses, a 2.22 goals-against average, and a .934 save percentage. His standout performances caught the attention of NHL scouts, marking the beginning of his transition to professional hockey.
From ECHL to the NHL
After one season with the Adirondack Thunder in the ECHL, Thompson signed with the Vegas Golden Knights in 2020. He quickly climbed the ranks, making his NHL debut later that season. By 2022, Thompson became the starting goalie for the Golden Knights. His trajectory almost led to a Stanley Cup win in 2023, albeit as a spectator due to an injury.
A New Chapter with the Washington Capitals
In 2024, when the Golden Knights chose to focus on Adin Hill, Thompson was traded to the Washington Capitals for two third-round picks. Thriving in D.C., he established himself as a reliable starter. His consistent play brought him to the attention of Team Canada, leading to his selection for the national team.
Olympic Aspirations in Milan
Now at 28, Thompson finds himself competing at the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics. Reflecting on his journey, he expressed gratitude for the unusual path he took, never envisioning an NHL and Olympic career. “Being in the Olympics was definitely not even in the question,” he noted. Surrounded by NHL stars like Sidney Crosby and Nathan MacKinnon, Thompson remains focused on winning. “All that matters in this tournament is winning games,” he stated.
