Republicans Condemn Beshear’s $40K Europe Trip Budget

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has come under fire from Republican lawmakers for a $40,000 budget dedicated to his recent economic development trip to Europe. This trip included significant stops in Davos, Switzerland, along with various cities in Finland and Sweden. The scrutiny marks the second consecutive year that Beshear’s international travel has faced criticism.

Trip Overview

Beshear’s European visit took place from January 16 to January 23. During this time, he met with business leaders and participated in the World Economic Forum. His schedule included discussions with representatives from 16 companies already operating in Kentucky and eight prospective firms that could potentially bring around 650 jobs to the state.

Trip Expenses

The total cost of the trip amounted to $40,000, broken down as follows:

  • Flight Expenses: Approximately $28,000 for five travelers.
  • Hotel Costs: Nearly $9,000 for five nights of lodging.
  • Other Expenses: $500 registration fee and $200 for parking.

First Lady Britainy Beshear and members of the governor’s staff joined him, with all flights booked through Delta Airlines.

Political Reactions

Republicans expressed their discontent, claiming that the trip served more to bolster Beshear’s national image, particularly in light of a potential presidential bid in 2028, rather than prioritizing Kentucky’s immediate economic needs. State Representative TJ Roberts articulated concerns about the strain on taxpayers, accusing Beshear of self-serving motives.

Senate President Robert Stivers acknowledged the tradition of previous governors undertaking international trips for economic development but stated that if any aspect of this trip was campaign-related, a reimbursement to taxpayers would be appropriate.

Historical Context and Legislative Response

This trip is not Beshear’s first to be scrutinized. Last year’s travel to Davos came with an estimated cost of $81,000. In response to ongoing concerns, Roberts has introduced House Bill 86, aiming to regulate the governor’s travel expenses. This bill would require state treasurer approval for out-of-state trips funded by taxpayer dollars and is currently pending a hearing in the House State Government Committee.

Activities at the World Economic Forum

At the World Economic Forum, Beshear participated in sessions focusing on economic prospects and challenges. He shared the stage with prominent governors such as Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan and Kevin Stitt of Oklahoma. During his presentations, he notably critiqued former President Donald Trump’s foreign policy, specifically labeling an incident as “dumb as hell.”

Despite the criticism, the Beshear administration remains hopeful that the trip can lead to job creation and enhance economic development for Kentucky. The state’s economic outlook closely ties to the outcomes of these international engagements.
