Ukraine Urges Poland for Support Following Russian Attack; Warsaw Responds

The Ukrainian transmission system operator, Ukrenerho, has requested emergency electric power supplies from Poland amid renewed hostilities. This request comes in the wake of a significant attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure by Russia. Warsaw has responded positively to this urgent appeal.

Poland’s Support for Ukraine Amid Energy Crisis

Denys Szmyhal, Ukraine’s Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, reported that Russia launched a “massive attack on critical elements of the Ukrainian energy network.” This assault occurred overnight, involving the use of approximately 400 drones and 40 missiles, targeting primarily the western parts of Ukraine.

Impact of the Attack

The strikes have caused a substantial electricity deficit across Ukraine’s transmission networks. Significant damage has been reported in several regions, including:

  • Volyn Oblast
  • Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast
  • Lviv Oblast
  • Rivne Oblast

President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized that instead of pursuing diplomatic solutions, Russia is opting for continued military aggression. He noted that this ongoing conflict necessitates increased supplies of anti-aircraft weapons for Ukraine.

Poland’s Monitoring and Response

In response to Ukraine’s request for electricity support, Polish Energy Minister Miłosz Motyka confirmed that Poland has accepted Ukraine’s appeal. He assured that electricity exports would be conducted while maintaining the safety of Poland’s energy system. The Polish Transmission System Operator (PSE) is actively monitoring the situation and is in contact with their Ukrainian counterparts.

Continued Attacks on Energy Infrastructure

The recent attack is part of a trend, as Russia has intensified strikes against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure during the fall and winter months. This has exacerbated the already critical energy crisis in the region.

As hostilities continue, Ukraine’s need for support from Poland and allies remains urgent. The collaboration between the two countries highlights the necessity for regional stability and energy security in the face of ongoing aggression.
