Charlie Setford Temporarily Leaves Ajax for MK Dons Move
Ajax and Charlie Setford are parting ways temporarily as the young goalkeeper has moved to MK Dons on loan. The 21-year-old completed his medical examination and is set to finish the season with the League Two club, which has also included an option to buy in the agreement.
Charlie Setford’s Career Highlights
Setford made his debut for Jong Ajax in August 2021, becoming the youngest goalkeeper to play for the reserve team. He quickly gained recognition for his talent, receiving the Abdelhak Nouri Trophy for the most promising player in the Ajax academy for the 2021/22 season.
- Debut: August 2021 for Jong Ajax
- Youngest goalkeeper in Jong Ajax history
- Awarded the Abdelhak Nouri Trophy in 2022
Despite his promising start, Setford’s opportunities in Ajax’s first team did not materialize. In total, he made 58 appearances for Jong Ajax, keeping 14 clean sheets. This season, he found himself sidelined as Joeri Heerkens and Paul Reverson took the goalkeeper position.
Reasons for the Move
This decision comes after Ajax indicated they were looking to move Setford on, primarily due to his salary, which they deemed too high for a player in his position. Although there has been interest from various clubs, many could not afford to pay even half of his wages.
Currently, Setford is under contract with Ajax until the summer of 2027, but a contract extension appears unlikely.
Family Connections in Football
In an interesting familial twist, Setford’s younger brother, Tommy, plays for Arsenal, indicating a strong sporting lineage in the family.
