Crunchyroll Increases Prices After Ending Free Streaming Option

Crunchyroll Increases Prices After Ending Free Streaming Option

Crunchyroll, a leading anime streaming service, has recently announced an increase in subscription prices, marking a significant shift for its users. This change comes following the decision to eliminate the free streaming option, which had been available for several years.

Price Increases Begin for Crunchyroll Subscribers

Effective immediately, monthly subscription prices have risen by up to 20 percent across different tiers. The most affordable plan, known as Fan, will now cost $10 instead of the previous $8. This adjustment follows similar price changes that occurred in May 2024.

New Subscription Prices

  • Fan Tier: Increased from $8 to $10 per month.
  • Mega Tier: Increased from $12 to $14 per month, allowing streaming on up to four devices.
  • Ultra Tier: Increased from $16 to $18 per month, enabling streaming on six devices and access to the Crunchyroll Manga app.

Current subscribers can expect to see these price changes reflected in their bills after March 4, while new customers will face the updated pricing right away.

Crunchyroll’s Transition Under Sony

Crunchyroll, which was acquired by Sony from AT&T in 2020, had approximately 3 million paying subscribers at that time, along with an additional 197 million free account users. Since the acquisition, Sony has made controversial changes, including the merger of Funimation into Crunchyroll. The shutdown of Funimation is planned for April 2024, leading to the discontinuation of users’ digital libraries.

Elimination of Free Streaming

In late 2022, Crunchyroll reduced the number of free titles available, ultimately announcing the complete termination of its free streaming service by December 31, 2025. This move reflects a broader trend among streaming services moving away from free accessibility.

New Features Companion to Price Increases

To justify these higher prices, Crunchyroll has promised new features and enhancements for subscribers. Upcoming additions include:

  • Teen profiles and PIN protection for content management.
  • Multiple profiles for personalized viewing.
  • Ability to skip intro theme songs and ending credits.
  • Expanded compatibility across various devices.

Crunchyroll expresses that these changes aim to provide fans with “more of what they love,” striving to enhance the viewing experience for its dedicated subscriber base.
