Bernard Drainville Officially Joins CAQ Leadership Race

Bernard Drainville has officially entered the leadership race of the Coalition avenir Québec (CAQ), aiming to succeed François Legault. This announcement was made at a restaurant in Lévis, where Drainville serves as a deputy since the election of 2022. The former Environment Minister expressed his commitment to a nationalist voice for Quebec, emphasizing the need for change within the party.

Drainville’s Campaign Launch

On Sunday morning, Drainville kicked off his campaign, stating, “A leadership race is intense; it’s a beautiful challenge.” He acknowledged that the CAQ has lost citizens’ trust in recent years and needs to reconnect with its foundational values.

Core Values and Economic Focus

Drainville intends to position CAQ as the party that champions the economy. He emphasized the importance of supporting local businesses and entrepreneurs. Additionally, he aims to prioritize family values, stating, “Family is my primary value; it’s also my greatest pride.”

Key Issues in the Leadership Race

A significant aspect of his campaign includes advocating for the third link between Quebec and Lévis, which he believes is critical for the region’s economic security. As he detailed his campaign goals, Drainville affirmed his position as the “candidate of change” rather than a continuation of the past.

Rivalry and Supporters

Christine Fréchette is Drainville’s only declared opponent, having initiated her campaign the previous Sunday in Trois-Rivières. She has garnered substantial support, including backing from nearly half of the cabinet, such as International Relations Minister Christopher Skeete.
