Olympian Michael Klim Headlines Australian Story’s 30th Anniversary Special

Olympian Michael Klim, a six-time medalist and prominent figure in Australian swimming, will headline a special episode commemorating the 30th anniversary of Australian Story on ABC. This episode is titled “Sink or Swim” and is scheduled to air on February 2, 2026. It will highlight Klim’s inspirational journey as an athlete and his life after competitive swimming.

Michael Klim’s Olympic Legacy

Klim represented Australia at three consecutive Olympic Games, making his debut at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. He then competed in the Sydney 2000 Olympics and the Athens 2004 Olympics. Throughout his swimming career, he won six Olympic medals, earning gold in the 4×100 and 4×200 meter freestyle relay events at the Sydney Olympics.

  • First Olympics: 1996 Atlanta
  • Second Olympics: 2000 Sydney
  • Third Olympics: 2004 Athens
  • Total Olympic Medals: 6

In addition to his Olympic achievements, Klim has an impressive record at the World Championships, securing a total of 12 titles. Notably, he won individual gold medals in the 100-meter butterfly and 200-meter freestyle at the 1998 World Championships in Perth.

Facing Life’s Challenges

Following his retirement, Klim encountered significant challenges. In 2020, he was diagnosed with Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP), a rare autoimmune disease affecting his mobility. Despite these hardships, Klim continues to contribute to the sport by running a swim school from his home in Bali.

In his reflections on living with CIDP, Klim expressed the emotional toll of the diagnosis, stating that it felt as if his “identity was taken away.” He emphasized that the mental hurdles posed by his condition are often more challenging than the physical aspects.

The Klim Foundation

To support others facing similar battles, Klim and his wife, Michelle Owen, founded the Klim Foundation. This organization aims to raise awareness and offer assistance to CIDP patients, highlighting their advocacy efforts in navigating the complexities of the illness.
