Bills Tap Leonhard as New Defensive Coordinator: Report

Former Buffalo Bills player Jim Leonhard is set to become the team’s new defensive coordinator, according to reports from ESPN’s Adam Schefter. This anticipated hiring follows the dismissal of Sean McDermott, who led the Bills for nine seasons.

Jim Leonhard’s Coaching Background

At 43 years old, Leonhard currently serves as the defensive pass game coordinator and assistant head coach for the Denver Broncos. In the recent NFL season, the Broncos’ defense recorded an impressive 68 sacks, just four shy of the single-season record of 72 held by the 1984 Chicago Bears. Furthermore, the Broncos allowed an average of only 278.2 yards per game, marking them as one of the league’s top defensive teams.

Leonhard’s Previous Experience

  • Joined the Broncos in 2024.
  • Former senior football analyst at Illinois.
  • Coached at Wisconsin from 2016 to 2022, serving as defensive coordinator most of that time and as interim head coach during part of the 2022 season.

Leonhard’s playing career includes time spent with the Bills, Ravens, Jets, Broncos, and Browns. He played for the Bills from 2005 to 2007, then again in 2013, marking his presence as a reliable NFL safety and special teams player.

New Direction for the Buffalo Bills

Leonhard’s addition marks a significant shift for the Bills’ defense. This move aligns with new head coach Joe Brady’s strategy, as he aims to construct a competitive coaching staff. Leonhard is the second Broncos coach Brady is bringing to the team, following his previous work under Sean Payton in 2017-18.

Coordinator Plans

Alongside Leonhard, reports indicate that Pete Carmichael is set to be hired as the Bills’ offensive coordinator. During his introductory press conference, Brady emphasized his focus on hiring the best football coaches available, rather than bringing in friends.

Defensive Opportunities

Before accepting the position with the Bills, Leonhard also interviewed for defensive roles with the Los Angeles Chargers and the Baltimore Ravens. His diverse experience and past connections with the Bills will be pivotal as he transitions into this new role.
