Sam Heughan Aims for Scottish Stage Return at Career-Launching Theatre
Sam Heughan is contemplating a return to the stage, specifically at the Royal Lyceum Theatre, where his career took flight. Recently, Heughan, known for his role as Jamie Fraser in the hit series Outlander, expressed his preference for live theater over film and television during an event at the Lyceum.
Heughan’s Journey in Theatre
Heughan first graced the stage at the Royal Lyceum as part of its Youth Theatre. He participated in productions like Macbeth and began honing his craft while working as an usher there. His education continued at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow. The actor revealed that just before landing the Outlander role in 2013, he faced numerous struggles and was near giving up acting altogether.
Memorable Experiences
- First on-stage role: Spear carrier in Macbeth at the Royal Lyceum
- Worked backstage at the Traverse Theatre, recalling “disastrous” experiences
- Received an Olivier Award nomination for his leading role in Outlying Islands, a David Greig play
Reflecting on his time as an usher, Heughan shared, “I wouldn’t say I was a good usher, but I thoroughly enjoyed myself.” He loved exploring the secrets of the theatre and watching performances daily, which inspired him greatly.
A Desire to Return
Heughan’s last stage performance was in another Macbeth production, portraying Malcolm 18 years ago. He expressed a strong desire to return to the Royal Lyceum, stating, “I would love to come back. It honestly doesn’t really matter what it is.” He noted that the stage felt “smaller and more intimate” than he remembered, but he remains eager to contribute to future productions.
When asked about potential projects, he emphasized his preference for a predominantly Scottish cast, stating, “What people do in theatre in Scotland is amazing.” He acknowledged the challenges of working in film and television, feeling that stage performances allow for greater artistic freedom.
Insights on Acting
Heughan admitted to experiencing daily self-doubt as an actor. “I am consumed by doubt,” he revealed, describing the mental challenge of stepping onto the stage. He noted that, although he once cared deeply about critics’ opinions, he now understands his own value. He articulated, “I guess you just get thrust into it. It takes you on a rollercoaster.”
Future Aspirations
Beyond theatre, Heughan has recently ventured into new business areas, including purchasing a distillery in Galloway. He has also taken on the role of ambassador for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. He confessed to learning about managing his energy to avoid burnout amidst his various commitments.
After finishing his work on Outlander, Heughan feels prepared to explore new opportunities without the pressure of long-term commitments. “Now it’s about trying to capitalise on that,” he said, expressing excitement for what lies ahead.
