Frustrated Berube Faces Maple Leafs’ Five-Game Losing Streak

The Toronto Maple Leafs are grappling with a significant five-game losing streak following a heavy 7-4 defeat to the Buffalo Sabres. This loss concludes their winless five-game home stand and places the team eight points adrift of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. As the Maple Leafs prepare for a four-game road trip before the Olympic break in February, head coach Craig Berube expressed his frustration during a post-game press conference.

Frustration with Defensive Play

After the game against the Sabres, Berube highlighted key areas for improvement. “We’ve got to keep the puck out of our net,” he stated. The Maple Leafs conceded a total of 25 goals during their home stand, a number that includes six goals against both the Minnesota Wild and the Vegas Golden Knights, plus seven goals against Buffalo.

Identifying Issues

  • Goals Allowed: 183, the highest in the Eastern Conference.
  • Tied for third-worst in the NHL for goals against.

Berube pinpointed several factors contributing to this defensive breakdown. “We need better game management, improved puck play, and to minimize odd-man rushes,” he remarked. The coach also emphasized the necessity for goalies to make critical saves.

Health Concerns in Goal

Joseph Woll and Anthony Stolarz, the two primary goalkeepers for the Maple Leafs, have both missed considerable time due to injuries. In the recent loss, Woll faced 30 shots and allowed six goals. Meanwhile, Stolarz had already allowed five goals in a previous game against the Golden Knights.

When questioned about the absence of Denis Hildeby, who has stepped in during Woll and Stolarz’s injuries, Berube asserted, “These are our guys.” He confirmed Stolarz’s return to the lineup, emphasizing confidence in the current roster.

Team’s Identity and Upcoming Challenges

Following a closed-door team meeting, both Berube and team leaders discussed strategies to alter the team’s focus for the road trip. Berube remarked, “Our identity currently leans toward scoring but that’s not everything.” He insisted that a more balanced approach, focusing on defensive responsibilities, is essential for success in the league.

Despite the challenges, Berube stressed the importance of hard work and competition. “We have to earn our breaks,” he concluded. “All we can do is push forward and concentrate on the next game.”
