Maple Leafs Coach Craig Berube Injured in Severe Gym Accident

Craig Berube, the head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs, recently experienced a severe injury in a gym accident. The 60-year-old NHL veteran surprised fans and media at a press conference on January 23 with visible injuries. Berube sported a significant black eye and displayed a stitched gash on his forehead.

Details of the Gym Accident

Berube explained that his injuries resulted from a mishap while working out. He humorously mentioned, “The other guy looked way worse” and joked about facing “three of them.” Despite the severity of the injuries, he takes full responsibility for the incident, noting, “It’s all on me. It’s my fault, and I’m fine.” He confirmed that he would continue to coach the team in their upcoming game against the Vegas Golden Knights.

Injury Update and Recovery

On January 24, Berube provided an update on his condition. He stated that he received around 50 stitches for his forehead laceration. “I think everybody, they’re worried, like what happened,” he acknowledged. While he admitted the injuries might look alarming, he reassured everyone, “But I’m fine, though.”

Support from Teammates

During his recovery, Berube found comfort in speaking with a former NHL teammate who had a similar accident in the gym. “He did the same thing I did, so I actually feel better,” Berube shared, noting the conversation helped lighten his mood.

Mitch Marner’s Return

The game against the Golden Knights not only marked Berube’s return to the sidelines but also featured the comeback of star player Mitch Marner. Marner had joined the Golden Knights during the offseason and was expected to make a notable impact in the game.
