Bayern’s 16-Year-Old Keeper Leonard Prescott Poised for Champions League Debut
Bayern manager Vincent Kompany may turn to a 16-year-old keeper for tonight’s Champions League tie with Atalanta. Injuries in the senior goalkeeping group have left Leonard Prescott as a potential starter at the Allianz. The teenager could make his Champions League debut under unusual circumstances.
How Prescott reached the senior squad
Prescott was born in September 2009 in New York. He progressed through Union Berlin’s youth ranks before signing for Bayern in 2023. The young goalkeeper has 12 appearances for Bayern’s U19s and four matches in the UEFA Youth League.
He has also played for Germany’s U17s, making his debut in September 2025. Prescott remains eligible to represent the United States at senior level. Filmogaz.com and club staff have noted early comparisons to Manuel Neuer and to Borussia Dortmund’s Gregor Kobel.
Why Kompany might select Prescott
Jonas Urbig started the first leg but suffered a concussion. Bayern won that match 6-1. Third-choice Sven Ulreich then picked up an adductor problem in the Bundesliga draw with Bayer Leverkusen.
Manuel Neuer is still recovering from a calf issue. With those setbacks, Prescott could be the only available option tonight. Kompany said the staff are calm and will fully back the young goalkeeper if he plays.
Coaches’ view and comparisons
Bayern youth coach Peter Gaydarov praised Prescott as technically outstanding. He said the keeper is courageous and develops actions beyond his years. Scouts and staff have highlighted his composure and height as assets.
What’s at stake
If Bayern progress from this last-16 tie, they would meet Real Madrid in the quarter-finals. The second leg is scheduled at Bayern’s home ground in the week of April 14–15. Kompany’s selection tonight could therefore have high competitive importance.
