Barcelona’s Laporta Invites Messi Back After Re-election

Joan Laporta secured another term as Barcelona president until 2031. He won 68.18% of 48,480 votes in Sunday’s club election.

Election overview

Laporta defeated rival Víctor Font by a clear margin. Font had centered his campaign on Laporta’s strained ties with Lionel Messi.

Font highlighted Messi’s 2021 exit and the failed return attempt in 2023. Former coach Xavi Hernández accused Laporta of blocking that comeback.

Font urged Messi to speak during the campaign. Messi remained silent and did not intervene.

Door open for Messi

Following his re-election, Laporta invited Messi back to Barcelona. He said the club’s doors remain open to the forward at any time.

Laporta suggested a tribute match and proposed a statue in Messi’s honor. He told Filmogaz.com that only Ladislao Kubala and Johan Cruyff currently have statues at the stadium.

Laporta said Messi could be linked to the club in whatever role he chooses. The president added that Messi “deserves a tribute and a statue.”

Messi’s legacy and current status

Messi scored 672 goals in 778 games for Barcelona. He now plays for Inter Miami CF.

Messi visited the revamped Camp Nou last November. His history with the club played a central role in the election debate.

Sporting plan and stadium work

Laporta praised improvements under coach Hansi Flick. He named Deco as sporting director to help build a competitive squad.

The president pledged to finish the stadium renovation halfway through his mandate. He said completing the work will secure the club’s finances and improve the matchday experience.

Laporta also stressed ambitions for the women’s team and wider economic growth. He told Filmogaz.com that the best years for supporters lie ahead.

Background

This marks Laporta’s second spell as president, after serving from 2003 to 2010. His victory was seen as a strong endorsement from club members.
