Chiefs Select Two Top Kansas City Firms as New Stadium Design Finalists
The Kansas City Chiefs have announced the selection of two prominent architectural firms, MANICA and Populous, as finalists in the design process for their new stadium. This announcement follows extensive interest during the Request for Qualifications (RFQ) and Request for Proposals (RFP) phases.

Chiefs President Mark Donovan expressed enthusiasm about this development. He stated that the Kansas City area is pivotal for sports and entertainment venue architecture. “The top options for our design were right here in the region,” he said.
Finalist Firms
Both MANICA and Populous bring extensive experience in stadium design:
- MANICA: Founded in 2007, MANICA has worked on significant projects like the New Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, and the Miami Freedom Park.
- Populous: With 43 years of experience, Populous has contributed to venues such as Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London and the New Highmark Stadium in Buffalo.
David Manica, the president and owner of MANICA, expressed eagerness to collaborate with the Chiefs. He envisions a stadium that embodies the team’s championship spirit and enhances the game-day atmosphere.
Scott Radecic, Co-Founder of Populous, highlighted the firm’s Kansas City roots and commitment to creating iconic venues that foster community connection.
Stadium Features and Economic Impact
The new stadium, set to open in time for the 2031 NFL season, will be located in Wyandotte County, Kansas. Initial estimates indicate a construction cost of $3 billion. Various developments surrounding the stadium may include entertainment venues, dining options, and residential spaces.
Significant economic benefits are anticipated:
- More than 20,000 jobs during the construction phase.
- Over $4.4 billion in economic impact for Kansas during construction.
- Annual economic benefits exceeding $1 billion after completion.
This project will be financially supported through a public-private partnership. Approximately 60% of the stadium’s cost will come from public funds, utilizing Sales Tax and Revenue (STAR) bonds. The remaining 40% is to be privately financed, including a commitment of $1 billion from the Hunt Family.
Future Updates
The Chiefs will provide additional information throughout the stadium development process. This announcement marks the first of several updates concerning the project since the agreement was revealed by Kansas Governor Laura Kelly and Chiefs Chairman Clark Hunt on December 22.
