Vishal Jethwa Reflects on Childhood Challenges After Father’s Early Passing
Vishal Jethwa, an emerging talent in Bollywood, is celebrating the success of his film, *Homebound*. Although the film did not secure a nomination at the Academy Awards, it represents a pivotal moment in his career. This project has restored his reputation in an industry that often challenges newcomers.
Facing Early Life Challenges
In a candid discussion with *Humans of Bombay*, Jethwa shared insights into his difficult upbringing. He comes from a very poor family, a reality he considers a privilege for the growth it afforded him. He lost his father at a young age and watched his mother struggle to raise the family. These experiences profoundly shaped his perspective and fueled his ambition in acting.
Education and Early Career
As he recounted his past, Jethwa recalled, “I studied in a Gujarati-medium school and lived in Malad. Later, we moved to Mira Road, where I continued my education at Thakur College in Kandivali.” By the ninth grade, he was working as a background dancer on *Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L’il Champs*, where he had the opportunity to perform alongside stars like Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn. Despite this exposure, he soon realized that dancing was not his true passion.
The Influence of His Mother
Jethwa’s admiration for his mother resonates deeply throughout his narrative. “I am very close to my mother due to the struggles she faced,” he said. Her journey as a domestic worker and her resilience in overcoming hardships serve as a source of inspiration for him. Reflecting on her tough childhood, he expressed gratitude for the relative stability he experienced compared to her life.
Reflections on Privilege and Responsibility
In previous interviews, Jethwa has also discussed the financial struggles his family endured. “My sister encouraged me by saying, ‘Don’t stress so much, you are the son of a domestic help.’” His mother’s efforts, which included cleaning homes and selling sanitary pads to support the family, have left a lasting impact on him.
As he continues on his journey, Jethwa acknowledges the complexities of privilege. “While it often brings benefits, it also comes with greater responsibility,” he noted. This realization underscores his determination to succeed and give back to those who inspired him along the way.
