Browns Announce Decision on Nate Scheelhaase Amid Bills Interest

The Cleveland Browns continue their search for a new head coach amid ongoing interest in Nate Scheelhaase from the Buffalo Bills. The franchise recently completed their second interview with Scheelhaase after the Los Angeles Rams’ postseason exit.

Browns Conduct Second Interview with Nate Scheelhaase

On January 16, 2024, the Browns held a virtual interview with Nate Scheelhaase. Following that, they met in Los Angeles for an in-person discussion on a Monday morning. This meeting lasted until approximately 3:30 p.m. Pacific Time.

The Browns have already conducted second interviews with three other candidates. Scheelhaase, currently 35 years old, is one of the favorites for the position. After joining the Rams as an offensive assistant in 2024, he was promoted to pass game coordinator in 2025. Under his guidance, the Rams’ passing attack ranked 10th in 2024 and first in 2025.

Cleveland’s Competition for Scheelhaase

As Scheelhaase interviews with the Browns, reports emerged of the Bills showing interest. He is scheduled to meet with the Bills on the same night following his conversation with Cleveland.

The Browns’ coaching search has faced challenges, including candidates opting out of consideration. Notably, former Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel and Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter declined second interviews. Additionally, Jaguars offensive coordinator Grant Udinski withdrew from the process.

  • Second interviews completed: Nate Scheelhaase, Jim Schwartz, Todd Monken
  • Candidates who withdrew: Mike McDaniel, Jesse Minter, Grant Udinski

Other Candidates in the Mix

Despite Scheelhaase’s strong candidacy, the Browns are still considering Jim Schwartz and Todd Monken. Schwartz is currently the team’s defensive coordinator. Although there is interest in keeping him on staff, this stance could deter potential hires.

Others, like Anthony Lynn, have also interviewed for the position. However, Lynn’s candidacy appears to be less favored compared to the leading candidates.

Cleveland’s Rigorous Interview Process

The Browns have implemented a comprehensive evaluation strategy for their coaching search. Reports indicate candidates are being asked to complete personality assessments and essays as part of their interviews. This thorough approach has drawn both interest and criticism regarding its potential limitations.

While Nate Scheelhaase raises hopes for the Browns, the competition and the complexities of the search continue to evolve as other teams look for new leadership.
