Steelers Coaching Candidate Withdraws from Consideration

The coaching search for the Pittsburgh Steelers has taken a turn as Klay Kubiak, the San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator, has withdrawn from consideration. Kubiak announced his decision to remain with the 49ers, where he has been integral to the team’s success.

Klay Kubiak’s Coaching Background

Klay Kubiak has just completed his fifth season with the 49ers and his first as offensive coordinator. His previous roles included being the offensive passing game specialist and assistant quarterbacks coach in 2022 and 2023, as well as a defensive quality control coach in 2021.

This season, the 49ers’ offensive unit performed remarkably well, ranking:

  • No. 6 in yards per game (351.4)
  • No. 5 in passing yards per game (244.5)
  • No. 10 in points per game (25.7)

Impact of Kubiak’s Decision

Multiple teams, including the Steelers and Raiders, had sought to interview Kubiak for head coaching positions. However, Kubiak chose to stay in California, preferring to collaborate with head coach Kyle Shanahan.

Kubiak is the son of Gary Kubiak, a well-known NFL figure, and his brother, Klint, serves as the offensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks. Under Shanahan’s guidance, Kubiak has contributed to the development of standout players, including quarterback Brock Purdy, who averaged 240.8 passing yards per game over nine regular-season outings.

Steelers’ Leadership Changes

The Steelers’ coaching search is especially significant in the wake of their recent playoff exit, which occurred when the Houston Texans, coached by former Shanahan assistant DeMeco Ryans, defeated them in the Wild Card round. This loss marks a pivotal moment for the franchise, as it appears to signal the end of Mike Tomlin’s lengthy tenure with the team.

Klay Kubiak’s choice to withdraw comes as a surprise, but it reflects his commitment to his current position and to continuing his professional development under Shanahan’s leadership.
