Fairfax Legislator Proposes New Assault Weapons Ban
In Fairfax, Virginia, State Senator Saddam Azlan Salim introduced a bill on Wednesday aimed at banning assault weapons. If enacted, this legislation would take effect on July 1. Representing the 37th District, which includes parts of central Fairfax County, the City of Fairfax, and Falls Church, Salim emphasized the urgent need to address gun violence.
Overview of SB749: Assault Weapons Ban
The proposed bill, identified as SB749, aims to prohibit the importation, sale, and possession of assault firearms and specific ammunition feeding devices. Salim collaborated with public safety experts and gun violence survivors during the bill’s development, highlighting the importance of collective input in tackling this pressing issue.
Support from Other Legislators
- Senator Creigh Deeds (D-11) serves as the chief co-patron of the bill.
- He expressed support for the Second Amendment while stressing that it does not guarantee the right to own an assault-style weapon.
Deeds noted his background in responsible gun ownership, stating, “I grew up on a farm in rural Virginia and spent countless hours in the woods hunting.” His remarks underscore the distinction between responsible gun use and ownership of high-capacity weaponry.
Previous Attempts to Restrict Assault Weapons
During the 2024 and 2025 legislative sessions, Salim also introduced bills aimed at limiting access to assault weapons. Although both measures passed in the Virginia General Assembly, they were ultimately vetoed by former Governor Glenn Youngkin.
Call for Action
The issue of gun violence has created a climate of fear among students and parents. Salim highlighted the reality of school drills in preparation for potential shooters, stressing the dangerous situations faced by police officers. “This legislation will save lives in our commonwealth and bring safety and security back to our schools, places of worship, and other public spaces,” he asserted.
As the debate around SB749 unfolds, advocates hope it will navigate the legislative process successfully to enhance public safety in Virginia.
