Blue Line Weekend Shutdown Extended Amid Approaching Cold Weather

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) has announced an extension of the Blue Line service suspension this weekend due to severe cold weather conditions. The affected route will run between Bowdoin and Orient Heights.

Details of the Blue Line Service Suspension

Originally, the MBTA had planned to halt the Blue Line operations between Bowdoin and Airport stations. However, the service interruption has been widened to include the segment from Bowdoin to Orient Heights.

Reason for the Suspension

MBTA officials stated that this extension is necessary for the Operations Control Center to effectively manage switch infrastructure amid freezing temperatures. The agency aims to ensure passenger safety and maintain operational integrity during harsh weather.

Shuttle Bus Services and Accessibility

In response to the service suspension, the MBTA is providing free and accessible shuttle buses. These buses will stop at several key stations, including:

  • Orient Heights
  • Wood Island
  • Airport
  • Maverick
  • Haymarket

While the shuttle service is in operation, it is important to note that there will be no bus services to or from Bowdoin, Government Center, State, or Aquarium stations. Passengers can utilize free fares at:

  • Orient Heights
  • Suffolk Downs
  • Beachmont
  • Revere Beach
  • Wonderland

Additional Transportation Options

The East Boston Ferry will also operate free of charge throughout the weekend. MBTA advises passengers using shuttle buses to allow an additional 40 minutes for their travel time during this period.

For updates and further information, passengers can stay informed through MBTA communications, ensuring a smooth transit experience despite the challenging weather conditions.
