Grier Details Decision to Demote Chernyshov

General Manager Mike Grier announced that Igor Chernyshov could return to the San Jose Sharks this season. Following a 15-game NHL stint, Chernyshov was reassigned to the San Jose Barracuda. Grier indicated that the likelihood of Chernyshov’s return is promising.

Chernyshov had a strong start to his NHL career, securing eight points in his first seven games. However, his performance tapered off, as he managed only three assists in his subsequent eight games. His last game with the Sharks showcased his potential; he recorded two assists during a 4-1 win against the Florida Panthers on January 19.

Roster Changes and Development Needs

The Sharks are experiencing a crowded roster as injured players return. Key forwards such as Will Smith and Philipp Kurashev are back in action, along with recent trade pickup Kiefer Sherwood. Due to these additions, Grier sent veteran defender Nick Leddy to the Barracuda after waiving him to reinstate Vincent Desharnais on defense.

Grier noted that as the team’s health improves, more roster decisions will be made in the coming week. Notably, veterans Jeff Skinner, Adam Gaudette, and Ryan Reaves have recently become healthy scratches due to the roster congestion the Sharks are facing.

Future Outlook for Igor Chernyshov

For now, Grier emphasized the importance of Chernyshov gaining additional playing time with the Barracuda. The Barracuda will compete in eight games during the Sharks’ Olympic break, which lasts from February 4 to February 26. Grier stated, “For Cherny, he just needs to keep playing. It’s important for his development to stay active on the ice.”

Chernyshov has shown the ability to perform at a high level in the NHL, and Grier expects him to continue building on his skills while playing with the Barracuda. “We expect him to go down there and pick up where he left off,” Grier added, underscoring the development goals set for the young player.
