Air Canada Plane Hits Vehicle at New York’s LaGuardia Airport
An Air Canada Express regional jet collided with a Port Authority fire truck on a LaGuardia runway late Sunday. The impact injured four people, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter.
What happened
The Federal Aviation Administration identified the aircraft as a Bombardier CRJ-900 twin-jet. The flight originated in Montreal and was on final landing. The collision occurred on Runway 4 at about 11:45 p.m. ET.
Sources said the jet was traveling roughly 30 mph at the end of its landing roll. Seventy-six passengers and four crew members were aboard at the time.
Injuries and passengers
Two flight crew members suffered serious injuries. The pilot and copilot were described as badly injured by preliminary sources.
Two Port Authority officers also sustained injuries. A sergeant and an officer suffered broken limbs and were in stable condition at a hospital, according to the same sources.
Vehicle and damage
The vehicle struck was a Port Authority fire truck staffed by police officers. Social media video showed the jet with its cockpit pitched upward.
The footage showed heavy damage to the underside of the forward fuselage. No other major injuries were reported early Monday.
Response and investigation
The New York Police Department’s media affairs office confirmed the collision with what appeared to be a Port Authority vehicle. The airport was briefly closed and a ground stop was issued because of the aircraft emergency.
The FAA said it opened an investigation. The National Transportation Safety Board said it was gathering information about the event.
