FBI Investigates Colts Owner Jim Irsay’s Death, Team Confirms
The FBI has initiated an investigation into the death of former Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay, as confirmed by the Colts organization. Irsay passed away in May 2025, reportedly due to “cardiac arrest from pneumonia and heart complications.” His death was characterized by the team as peaceful, occurring in his sleep.
Concerns Over Substance Abuse
Recent reports have raised concerns regarding Irsay’s struggles with substance abuse. He was revealed to have battled long-standing addiction issues, particularly with painkillers. The Washington Post indicated that he had experienced three overdoses over the five years leading up to his death.
FBI’s Investigation Details
The investigation focuses on multiple aspects relating to Irsay’s death. The FBI is examining:
- His substance use, both illegal and prescription drugs.
- His relationship with Dr. Harry Haroutunian, a California-based addiction specialist.
- Records pertaining to his medical treatments and prescriptions.
A subpoena for records was reportedly issued by the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California earlier this month. Although the Colts stated they were aware of the investigation, they mentioned that they had not yet been contacted by the FBI.
Medical Treatment and Circumstances Surrounding Death
In the months leading up to his death, Irsay was prescribed ketamine, a substance primarily used as a general anesthetic. This information has heightened scrutiny on the medical practices concerning his treatment. The circumstances of his death took place in a hotel room in Beverly Hills, where he was reportedly undergoing treatment by Dr. Haroutunian.
Notably, no autopsy was conducted after Irsay’s death, and the local police quickly closed their investigation, citing the cause as natural. The Colts’ current management, including Irsay’s daughters—Carlie Irsay-Gordon, Casey Foyt, and Kalen Jackson—have acknowledged their father’s imperfections. They emphasized his efforts to destigmatize addiction and mental health issues through advocacy.
The NFL has refrained from commenting on the details surrounding Irsay’s death as the investigation progresses.
