Inkle Studio has announced the impressive launch of its latest game, TR-49, marking its best debut in 14 years. This game has outperformed past titles such as Heaven’s Vault and A Highland Song, despite their longer development times and greater resource investment. Jon Ingold, co-founder of Inkle and the creator of TR-49, expressed surprise at this success.
Quick Development and Unique Gameplay
TR-49 was developed within a span of nine months as part of an experimental initiative to utilize the open-source game engine, Godot. Ingold noted that creating the game also allowed them to collaborate with actors, a feature that adds a performative element to the experience. Unlike Inkle’s typically text-focused games, TR-49 includes an audio drama aspect.
A One-Sitting Experience
A standout feature of TR-49 is its design as a ‘one-sitting’ game. Players can complete the game in approximately four hours for a price of $7. This model has significant advantages, as Ingold emphasized that players can experience the entire narrative without losing commitment, ensuring that “people SEE THE END!” He considers this completion rate highly beneficial.
Future of Inkle’s Game Development
Due to TR-49’s successful launch, Inkle may reconsider its approach to future projects. Although the studio has previously created shorter games like Overboard! and Expelled!, the success of TR-49 could encourage the company to adopt a similar one-sitting model in upcoming titles. Ingold pointed out, “If we’re going to make that a sustainable model, we might need to be able to make things a little bit quicker.” He remains enthusiastic about the concept of “compact games.”
