Kelowna Airport Unveils Expanded Terminal, Welcomes Travelers Next Week

A significant expansion at Kelowna International Airport (YLW) is set to welcome travelers starting January 28. This enhancement introduces upgraded amenities, crucial for improving passenger experience.

Highlights of the Expanded Terminal

The renovation encompasses an additional 5,590 square meters. Mayor Tom Dyas lauded this development, calling it “an important milestone” for the airport. YLW serves as a vital hub that boosts job opportunities, tourism, and economic growth in the region.

Details of the Expansion

Airport CEO Sam Samaddar emphasized that January 28 marks just the beginning of improvements at YLW. Over the next year, renovations will continue within the existing terminal, adding 1,200 more square meters to enhance passenger facilities.

  • New washroom concourse
  • Pet relief station
  • Grab-and-go food and beverage options

Upgraded Passenger Amenities

The newly expanded terminal features several enhancements for travelers:

  • Expanded security screening area with CT x-ray technology for improved efficiency.
  • New departures lounge with direct access to multiple gates.
  • Enhanced food and beverage options, including the Ellison Field Taphouse and Vintners Exchange.
  • Improved wayfinding and upgraded digital displays throughout the terminal.
  • Contemporary design incorporating BC mass timber, financially supported by a $500,000 provincial grant.

Technological Advancements in Security

The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) played a significant role in the expansion. President and CEO Neil Parry noted that YLW is the first airport of its size in Canada to fully deploy CT x-ray technology for screening.

This advancement improves threat detection and enhances the efficiency of the screening process. Passengers can now keep permitted liquids, laptops, and electronic devices in their carry-on luggage.

Project Financials

The $108-million expansion project was financed entirely through airport user fees, ensuring no burden on local taxpayers. This investment reflects YLW’s commitment to enhancing traveler experience and operational capabilities.

As the terminal expansion opens next week, the community and travelers alike look forward to exploring the improved amenities at Kelowna International Airport.
