Victoria Nears Launch of Tap-and-Go Public Transport System
Victoria is set to enhance its public transport payment system with the introduction of a tap-and-go method. This system will enable users to pay using credit cards or smartphones. The initiative is in the final testing phases prior to public implementation.
Background of Tap-and-Go Payment System
The tap-and-go payment feature was included in the 2023 contract awarded to Conduent, a company with ties to both the US and France. This contract involves managing the myki ticketing system, but the rollout has been marred by delays and concerns regarding the effectiveness of prior testing.
Testing Phases and Upcoming Trials
- Controlled laboratory tests will begin next month.

Once testing concludes, the goal is to launch tap-and-go payment across the broader network early this year. This modernization aims to align Victoria with other states like New South Wales and Queensland, which have successfully implemented similar systems.

According to Gabrielle Williams, Victoria’s Public Transport Minister, the tap-and-go facility will first be available for train travel. Subsequently, the system will be expanded to buses and trams.

Challenges and Criticism
The initiative has not been without its challenges. A previous six-month trial of ticketless travel conducted in Wangaratta in 2025 faced criticism for being ineffective. Insiders labeled it a “gimmick,” stating that it did not adequately test real-world usability.
Concerns regarding Conduent’s ability to execute the project have been raised. Critics have questioned the company’s international experience with similar tap-and-go technologies. Additionally, the government faced backlash for previously rejecting a myki credit card tap-on trial, which had been prepared for rollout.
