Calls Mount for Peru’s Interim President’s Ouster Over Secret Meetings with Chinese Businessmen
José Jerí, Peru’s interim President, faced scrutiny recently over undisclosed meetings with Chinese businessmen. These encounters have led to a criminal investigation and intensified calls for his resignation. This incident highlights the ongoing political instability in Peru, which has seen seven different presidents since 2016.
Political Context in Peru
The crisis comes as Peru prepares for a general election on April 12, amid rising public discontent due to escalating crime rates. Jerí, who took office in October after the abrupt removal of President Dina Boluarte, has denied any wrongdoing.
Meetings with Chinese Businessmen
Jerí addressed Congress this week concerning his unregistered meetings with two Chinese nationals: Yang Zhihua and Ji Wu Xiaodong. According to Jerí, he met with Yang, who owns a Chinese restaurant and a wholesale store, to enjoy a meal and purchase candy. However, suspicions arose when Jerí was spotted at the restaurant on December 26, wearing a hood and carrying a bag.
- Yang Zhihua: Owner of a restaurant and a wholesale store. Received a 2023 concession to build a hydroelectric plant in the Andes.
- Ji Wu Xiaodong: Allegedly connected to a criminal organization involved in illegal logging. He has visited the presidential palace multiple times.
Investigations and Denials
Peru’s attorney general has initiated a preliminary investigation against Jerí for potential influence peddling and illegal lobbying. The investigation is currently deemed confidential. Jerí has expressed his cooperation, offering to provide statements as needed.
In an interview on Tuesday, Jerí dismissed the calls for his resignation, labeling them as part of a “destabilizing” effort by the opposition. He claimed that his interactions with the Chinese businessmen were solely intended to celebrate the upcoming Peruvian-Chinese Friendship Day, scheduled for February 1.
Controversial Background of Ji Wu
Notably, Ji Wu is under house arrest due to his suspected affiliation with illegal activities. Despite this, Jerí maintained that he only visited the presidential palace to assist with preparations for the Friendship Day. Jerí further claimed that Ji Wu’s limited Spanish proficiency prevented him from participating in discussions.
The political landscape in Peru continues to evolve, with growing concerns over governance and accountability as the nation heads towards the upcoming elections.
