Denis Shapovalov Advances
Denis Shapovalov moved forward in the tournament by defeating wild card Bu Yunchaokete from China. At 26 years old, Shapovalov hails from Richmond Hill, Ontario, and is currently the 21st seed in the competition.
In the next round, he will compete against Marin Cilic from Croatia. Shapovalov previously reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open in 2022, where he faced the eventual champion, Rafael Nadal. This year, he remains as the only Canadian in the men’s singles after Felix Auger-Aliassime, Gabriel Diallo, and Liam Draxl were eliminated in the first round.
Victoria Mboko’s Impressive Start
Victoria Mboko also made headlines by securing her spot in the second round. The 19-year-old from Toronto, who is seeded 17th, triumphed over Australia’s Emerson Jones in just 72 minutes.
A rising star, Mboko was named WTA Newcomer of the Year last year. She gained prominence in 2025 after defeating Naomi Osaka in the final of the Canadian Open held in Montreal. This marks her debut at the Australian Open, following her participation in other Grand Slam tournaments last year.
