P.E.I. Boy Joins Pittsburgh Penguins for a Day via Make-A-Wish
Myer Gallant, a ten-year-old boy from O’Leary, Prince Edward Island, recently had the opportunity of a lifetime through Make-A-Wish Canada. Diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy, Myer is a devoted fan of the Pittsburgh Penguins, particularly admiring players Sidney Crosby and Ryan Graves. After contemplating various wishes, he decided he wanted to meet his hockey heroes and attend a Penguins game.
P.E.I. Boy Joins Pittsburgh Penguins for a Day
In preparation for this incredible experience, Myer traveled to Pittsburgh with his mother, Jaclyn Ellis, and his cousin, Rowan Rennie. The trio shared their journey with Island Morning host Mitch Cormier, highlighting how profound the experience was for their family.
A Day with the Penguins
Upon arriving in Pittsburgh, Myer had the chance to attend a Penguins practice, followed by the game. To his delight, the team prepared a personal locker for him, outfitted with a helmet, a bag filled with gear, and a jersey featuring his name and the number 87.
During the visit, Myer met Sidney Crosby and shared an unforgettable moment, “We shook hands and talked for a while,” he recalled. Myer also signed a symbolic contract to be a member of the Penguins for the day. “I was red as a lobster, sweating,” he said. He even had the honor of reading out the starting lineup in the dressing room.
Thank You Gifts from the Maritimes
As a token of appreciation, Myer and his family brought gifts from the Maritimes to present to the players. Given that Crosby and Graves are both from Nova Scotia, they felt it fitting to share some local treats. Their gesture was well-received, particularly when Graves exclaimed upon finding local delicacies like Cow’s chips.
Later, during a chance encounter outside the arena, Graves invited the family into the dressing room before the next day’s game, enhancing their experience even further.
The Special Bond of Family
Myer enjoyed this dream-come-true moment alongside his best friend and cousin, Rowan, who has been a close companion throughout their lives. Myer’s brother chose to forgo his chance to ensure the cousins could share this memorable experience together.
The highlight of the day came when Crosby surprised the cousins with Team Canada jerseys—one for each boy. Their reactions were priceless, with Rowan overwhelmed with joy, stating, “I dropped to my knees. Like, what is happening?”
Myer’s mother described seeing her son’s joy as an exceptional experience, noting how the players treated both boys with kindness and respect. The day left a lasting impression on the family, showcasing the power of hope and generosity through organizations like Make-A-Wish.
