Meta’s AI Team Unveils Key Models Internally, Reports CTO

Meta Platforms has made significant strides in the artificial intelligence sector with the early internal release of new AI models from its Superintelligence Labs team. This achievement was highlighted by Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bosworth during a press briefing at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on January 21, 2023.

Meta’s New AI Lab and Model Development

Founded last year, the Meta Superintelligence Labs team has now completed around six months of development work. Bosworth described the initial models as “very good,” showcasing their promising potential. However, details on specific models delivered were not disclosed, keeping some aspects of the progress under wraps.

Upcoming AI Models

Recent reports have indicated that Meta is working on notable AI projects:

  • Model Avocado: A text AI model expected to launch in the first quarter of 2023.
  • Model Mango: An image- and video-focused AI model also in development.

Competitive Landscape and Strategies

Meta’s AI advancements come at a challenging time. The company has faced criticism over the performance of its Llama 4 model, particularly as competitors like Alphabet’s Google gain a foothold in the lucrative AI market. Bosworth acknowledged ongoing challenges, noting that there is still considerable work required post-training to ensure the models meet consumer and internal usability standards.

Looking Ahead to 2025 and Beyond

Despite the setbacks, there is optimism about the upcoming years. Bosworth identified 2025 as a critical year for Meta, referring to it as a “tremendously chaotic year” focused on building lab infrastructure and enhancing their technological capabilities. He emphasized that the years 2026 and 2027 would be pivotal for solidifying consumer AI trends.

As Meta continues to refine its AI models, the company is also investing in consumer products. Notably, it is marketing AI-equipped Ray-Ban Display glasses but has recently paused their international expansion to concentrate on fulfilling domestic orders. This strategic focus underscores Meta’s commitment to delivering innovative products to the market.
