UK Launches £23M School EdTech and AI Pilot Expansion
The UK government is set to invest £23 million to expand its School EdTech and AI pilot program. This initiative aims to evaluate the effectiveness of artificial intelligence and educational technology tools in various educational settings across England.
Details of the EdTech and AI Pilot
Scheduled to launch in September, the pilot will encompass primary, secondary, and further education institutions nationwide. More than 1,000 schools and colleges are anticipated to participate, following the success of a previous nine-month trial involving innovative educational technologies.
Objective of the Pilot
The primary goal is to assess the impact of these technologies on student outcomes, particularly for those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), as well as teacher workload. Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson highlighted the importance of this initiative during her speech at the BETT UK conference.

Evaluation and Standards
The Department for Education (DfE) aims to gather robust data on how these tools perform in real classroom environments. This includes understanding their effectiveness for both students and teachers. The DfE has reported over 280 expressions of interest from edtech companies eager to be part of this project.
Additionally, the DfE has recently introduced new standards for AI tools utilized in classrooms. These guidelines are designed to safeguard students’ mental health and ensure their cognitive development is prioritized.
Enhancing Teacher Skills
In conjunction with this pilot, the government announced plans for new skills pathways aimed at teachers and support staff. These pathways will enhance digital, data, and tech skills but will be integrated into current qualifications rather than creating new ones.
Phillipson expressed her enthusiasm for the potential of AI to revolutionize education, while also underscoring the significance of maintaining strong human connections in teaching. “We need to leverage the strengths of educators with the transformative capabilities of AI,” she stated.
