Over 400 Oklahoma Childcare Centers Close Since November; Advocates Respond
Since November, Oklahoma has witnessed the closure of over 400 childcare centers, raising concerns among advocates and parents alike. The Licensed Childcare Association (LCA) has been actively monitoring this situation, highlighting the emotional toll on families and providers.
Impact of Economic Factors on Childcare Centers
According to Janell Wheat, a board member of the LCA, the association receives daily calls from distressed childcare providers. These are difficult stories rooted in financial crisis.
- Many centers, like East Moore Child Development Center, are implementing drastic cost-cutting measures.
- Destiny Bivins, the owner of East Moore, cited increased costs for living essentials such as food and electricity.
Bivins emphasized the challenges posed by recent reductions in government subsidies, which could severely impact her revenue. “The cost of living has gone up dramatically,” she noted, referring to several financial pressures.
Projected Financial Losses Ahead
By the end of the COVID-era financial support in April, Bivins anticipates a loss of $4,000 per month. She fears that the proposed $5 reduction in daily assistance per child might push some childcare centers beyond their limits.
Future Changes to Eligibility
Looking ahead, starting in July, eligibility for family childcare subsidies will decrease from 85% to 55% of the state median income. This change has left many providers anxious about their clients’ financial situations.
Wheat cautioned that parents might unexpectedly lose financial support, impacting their access to childcare. “If providers keep shutting down, parents face tough decisions,” said Bivins.
Call to Action for Legislation
Bivins and Wheat are urging parents and childcare providers to engage with lawmakers and state officials to seek help. “We need to advocate for our community,” said Wheat, highlighting their commitment to the future of childcare in Oklahoma.
