Russia Delivers Six Su-30SME Jets to Myanmar via $400M Loan Deal
Myanmar formally inducted two Russian Su-30SME fighters into its air force on March 12, 2026. The jets carried serials 1901 and 1902.
Agreement and financing
The contract for six Su-30SME aircraft was signed in January 2018. Moscow financed the deal with a loan valued at about $400 million.
Observers have raised questions about whether air-to-air armament was included in the purchase. Myanmar’s modest defense budget made a loan arrangement the most feasible option.
Delivery timeline
Deliveries occurred in three pairs across several years. The full process took roughly eight years from contract to final induction.
The first two airframes, serials 1905 and 1904, were listed as complete on paper in April 2019. They were actually transferred in March 2022, began flight operations in July 2022, and were officially inducted in December 2022.
Production of the second pair, serials 1906 and 1907, was underway in August 2022. Those jets entered service with a formal ceremony in December 2023.
The final two aircraft, 1901 and 1902, arrived in December 2024. Their formal induction took place in March 2026, after about 18 months on the ground.
Operational questions and delays
The long intervals prompted scrutiny of technical and human factors. Delays may reflect pilot and technician training challenges.
Technical malfunctions or acceptance work on export Su-30SME models might also have contributed. Authorities have not publicly detailed the causes.
Fleet context
Myanmar remains the only international customer for the Su-30SME export variant. The jet type thus occupies a unique place in Yangon’s inventory.
As of last year, the air force listed 63 fighters on paper. That total included 31 MiG-29s of various modifications, 21 F-7s, and 11 Chinese-made FT-7s.
Manufacturing and expert note
Production work for the type takes place at the Irkutsk Aircraft Plant in Russia. Shipments to Myanmar came from that production line.

The $400 million Russian loan funded delivery of six Su-30SME fighters to Myanmar. The transaction remains significant for defense analysts monitoring regional aviation trends.
